## What is actually holding the windshield into a commercial cab?

A windshield is laminated glass, which means two plies of annealed glass sandwiching a plastic interlayer roughly thirty thousandths of an inch thick. That interlayer is why a windshield cracks and stays in one piece instead of exploding. Side and rear glass is tempered instead, heat treated so it breaks into blunt cubes, which is also why tempered glass can never be resin repaired.

The glass itself is only half the story. On any bonded installation the urethane bead is a structural member. It ties the glass into the cab opening, adds meaningful stiffness to the front of the cab, and on units fitted with a passenger restraint it acts as the backstop that keeps the bag deploying inward instead of pushing the glass out. A bad bond quietly removes all of that.

This is the part most fleets never see. A windshield installed on contaminated metal, with a short bead or a skipped primer step, looks identical to a correct one on the day it is delivered. The difference shows up as a leak in the first Santa Ana rain, a whistle on the SR-55, or in the worst case a glass that separates during an impact when it should have held.

## Why does the pinchweld matter more than the glass?

Bare painted steel does not, which is why the full strip approach is the wrong instinct.

Corrosion is the second problem, and in coastal Orange County it is common. Salt air moving inland over Santa Ana works under the old bead at any point where the factory e-coat was nicked during the original install. Once rust starts under urethane it lifts the bond from underneath. Every one of those spots has to be cut back to sound metal, treated, primed with an epoxy primer, and sealed before new adhesive touches it.

Primer discipline finishes the job. Glass primer goes on the frit band, pinchweld primer goes on any exposed metal, and both need their flash time, usually in the range of three to ten minutes depending on product and shop temperature. Laying urethane onto wet primer traps solvent in the bond line and produces a joint that never reaches full strength.

## How long does the unit sit before it can leave the shop?

Safe drive away time is the point at which the urethane has developed enough strength to hold the glass under load. It is not a guess and it is not the same for every product. Cold and dry slows the cure, warm and humid speeds it up. Working indoors matters here, because a bonded glass sitting in a Santa Ana yard at fifty two degrees on a January morning cures on a completely different clock than the same glass in a temperature controlled bay. ## Is a two piece Class 8 windshield different from a curved van windshield?

The glass is thicker, the halves have to be set with matched reveal on both sides, and the locking strip has to be rolled in properly or the center seal is the first place water shows up.

Curved glass on vans, cab forward units, and most medium duty cabs is a molded part, has to come from a supplier, and cannot be substituted with a cut piece.

Setting a two piece correctly is a two person job. Both halves go in with consistent gasket compression, the divider is seated last, and the whole perimeter gets a water test before the unit is released. Sloppy work here produces a leak that runs down the inside of the A pillar and eventually rots the cab floor corner, which turns a glass job into panel work.

## What happens to the camera that was bonded to the old glass?

On units built in the last decade, the forward camera does not mount to the cab. It mounts to a bracket that is bonded to the frit band on the inside of the windshield itself. Replace the glass and you have physically moved the camera, even if the new bracket sits within a few millimeters of the old one. A few millimeters at the lens is a large error a hundred yards down the road.

The correct sequence is pre scan, transfer or fit the bracket, set the glass, then recalibrate. Static calibration means placing the published target at a measured distance and height on a level floor, with the unit at correct ride height and the wheels straight. That is a shop floor procedure with real space requirements, which is another reason none of this belongs in a parking lot.

Radar and rain sensors ride along with the job. Rain sensors use a gel pad that has to be reseated without air bubbles or the wipers behave erratically. Any bumper mounted radar disturbed during the work gets checked for aim. A post scan closes the file and confirms the unit is leaving with no stored faults from the work we just did.

### Do I need calibration if the truck is older and has no lane keeping?

### Can you replace door glass and back glass too, or just windshields?

Both.
