## Why does mirror mounting matter more than the mirror itself?

Almost every mirror complaint that comes through the door is a mounting problem, not a glass problem. A quarter degree of play at the bracket becomes a shaking image the driver cannot use on the freeway.

## How should convex and spot mirrors be positioned on a commercial unit?

Flat mirror glass gives an accurate sense of distance over a narrow field. Convex glass gives a wide field with compressed distance. Both are needed, and the mistake fleets make is treating the convex head as an afterthought that gets bolted wherever there is room on the arm. Position drives whether it actually covers the blind zone or just duplicates what the flat glass already shows.

On a typical box truck or tractor, the convex head goes below or outboard of the flat head so the two fields overlap slightly rather than leaving a gap. Round spot mirrors, commonly eight inches, mount on the door or the fender position and cover the low right quadrant that neither main mirror sees. ## What is involved in a camera monitor system instead of mirrors?

Camera monitor systems replace or supplement conventional mirrors with slim camera pods and in cab displays. The appeal for a fleet is real: better low light performance, a wider field with no physical blind zone, and pods that are far narrower than a mirror arm, which matters on a van squeezing through a Santa Ana alley or a downtown loading dock approach.
