## Why does a chassis need a different coating than the cab does?

The cab is a visibility surface and gets a full base and clear system, because gloss retention and color match to the rest of the fleet are the whole point of spraying it. The chassis is a durability surface. Nobody grades a frame rail on gloss, but everybody notices when it is scaling and staining down the side of the tank.

Frame work gets a direct to metal coating, typically a two component epoxy or a high solids urethane chassis enamel, applied heavier than a body finish and usually single stage. Single stage on a chassis is the correct choice rather than a cost cut. Fewer layers means fewer interfaces to fail when the frame flexes and takes grit at speed.

Crossmembers, brackets, tank straps, and the inside faces of the rails are where corrosion actually starts, because those are the surfaces that hold water after a wash. Those get coated before the outer faces, so nothing is left uncoated because access closed up later in the sequence.

## What is involved in prepping a frame that has been on the road six years?

Six years of Southern California freeway leaves a frame carrying road film, brake dust, salt off the coastal air, and in most cases a layer of oil residue. The third is fittings. Air horns, marker light rows, fairings, mirror arms, bezels, grab handles, and deflectors. Every one of those comes off and goes back on, and every one is a place where masking instead of removing leaves a ridge that starts lifting within a year of pressure washing.
