## Why do compartment doors cause more downtime than collisions?

A service body has six to ten exterior doors, each opened dozens of times per working day, each hung on hinges near the outer edge of a panel that flexes every time the truck crosses a driveway. Hinges wear, doors drop, seals stop touching, and the crew starts finding wet tools after a rain. None of that is dramatic, and all of it takes the truck out of usable service faster than a fender hit.

The mechanical cause is nearly always the hinge and the panel it mounts to, not the latch. On a body approaching six figures of miles the hinge mounting area has fatigued, so the door hangs from a slightly moved point. Replacing the latch corrects nothing. Rebuilding the hinge mount, replacing the hinge, then aligning the door and finally adjusting the striker is the sequence that actually holds.

Master locking systems add a second layer. Rod linkages run the length of the body and depend on all the doors sitting where they were when the system was installed. One dropped door drags the whole linkage out of adjustment, which is why crews report that suddenly none of the compartments lock properly. Correcting the doors first and then re adjusting the linkage solves it, and going the other direction never does.

## How does the body mount to the chassis, and what goes wrong there?

A service body attaches to the chassis frame through mounting brackets and fasteners designed to let the body and the frame flex at different rates. That relationship is the whole point, and it is also where things fail. As mounting fasteners loosen, the body moves slightly on every uneven surface, the holes elongate, and the movement accelerates until the body is visibly walking on the frame.

The visible symptoms show up somewhere else entirely. Compartment doors that stop lining up, a bulkhead that shifted relative to the cab, a crack appearing at a compartment corner. Chasing the crack instead of the mount is a common and expensive mistake. Repair means restoring the mounting structure, not just tightening what is there. ## What happens when a crane, compressor or heavy accessory is mounted?

A service crane concentrates load into a very small footprint. Every lift puts a bending moment into the pedestal, through the subframe and into the chassis frame rails, and the load reverses each cycle. That is a fatigue condition by definition, so cracks appear at the weld toes on the pedestal base and at the subframe attachment long before anything looks dramatic.

Repair starts with cleaning the area and finding the full extent of the crack rather than the visible portion. Cracks get gouged out to sound material, rewelded with the correct process, and then the load path is improved with gussets or a larger footprint plate so the same crack does not return. Simply welding a visible crack shut without changing the geometry produces a repeat failure on the same schedule.

New installs get the same thinking in reverse. A crane or compressor mounted to a subframe that spreads load into the frame at multiple points behaves entirely differently than one bolted through a body floor. ## How is corrosion handled on a body that lives outdoors?

Service bodies corrode from the inside. ## Can a good body be moved to a new chassis?

Regularly, and it is often the better economic decision. A service body in sound condition can outlast the chassis under it by years, so when a chassis reaches the end of its useful life the body can be removed, refurbished and mounted to a replacement chassis. That keeps a crew working with the same compartment layout they already know instead of relearning a new body.

The transfer is a fabrication job more than a bolt off and bolt on. Frame lengths, mounting bracket positions, fuel and electrical routing and the cab to body clearance all change between chassis. The subframe is usually rebuilt or modified, new mounting brackets are fabricated, and the electrical connections for lighting are made up fresh rather than spliced into old harness.

While the body is off is the right time to do everything that is hard to reach when it is mounted. Compartment floors, underside coating, corroded lower sections and any accessory mounting reinforcement are all far cheaper with the body on stands. Fleets that plan a transfer as a refurbishment rather than just a move get another decade out of a body that already fit their work.

### None of my compartment doors lock properly anymore. Is the lock system bad?

Usually not. A master locking system runs rod linkage across every door and depends on all of them sitting where they were when it was installed. One door that has dropped on worn hinges drags the entire linkage out of adjustment. Correcting hinge mounts and door alignment first, then re adjusting the linkage, resolves it. Adjusting the linkage around a sagging door only moves the problem.

### There is a crack at the corner of a compartment. Do I just weld it?

Weld it and it comes back unless the cause is addressed. Unexplained cracking on a service body usually traces to loose or elongated body mounts letting the body work against the frame. The mounting hardware and bracket condition get checked first, the mount is restored, then the crack is prepared properly and repaired. Fixing the crack alone treats the symptom.

### My crane pedestal is cracking again after a previous repair. Why?
