Why does spraying to the factory paint code produce a mismatch?

A paint code describes the color the unit was built in. Seven years of Santa Ana sun, freeway grit, and weekly washing moves that color somewhere else. Whites chalk and go grey. Reds drop toward orange as the organic pigments break down. Silvers go dark as the clear yellows over the flake underneath it.

Spray that original code onto a replacement door and the door is correct while the truck is wrong. The panel reads brighter and cleaner than everything around it, and in direct sun the boundary becomes a line you can pick out from across a yard without looking for it.

So the read is taken off the unit, not off the sticker. We clean and polish a section of the adjacent panel first, because a spectrophotometer reads oxidation and road film as color and will hand back a formula that matches the dirt rather than the paint under it.

What is a blend panel, and why is the sprayed area larger than the damage?

A blend fades the new color out across an adjacent panel so the transition happens gradually instead of at an edge. The clear coat then goes over both panels as one continuous film, which is what actually hides the joint. Butting two panels at a seam almost always shows, because no formula is perfect and the human eye is very good at edges.

That means a bumper corner repair might involve spraying the bumper, the fender, and part of the door. On an estimate it looks like scope creep. It is the opposite of scope creep. Skipping the blend is what produces the repair that gets rejected at delivery and comes back through the booth a second time.

On a large flat commercial side, a box wall or a trailer skin, there is often no body line to hide behind. In that case the blend runs to the nearest rivet line, seam, or corner post, and where none exists within a reasonable distance the honest answer is to spray the full panel and say so up front.

How do you match a metallic or a pearl on a commercial unit?

Metallics are harder than solids because the color depends on how the flake lies down, and that depends on gun setup, air pressure, distance, and how wet the coat goes on. The same formula sprayed by two operators produces two visibly different colors. The formula is only half of a metallic match and the technique is the other half.

We spray a letdown card, three or four sections of the same mix applied with deliberately different technique, cure it, and hold it against the truck in daylight. That establishes the spray variable before the gun goes near the unit rather than after the panel is already covered and the boundary is already visible.

Pearls and tri stage colors add a middle coat, and the mid coat film thickness controls the final shade. On a tri stage the blend has to be staged as well, base out to one boundary, mid coat out to a wider boundary, clear over everything, or the transition shows as a halo ring in low sun.

What makes white so difficult when almost every fleet runs white?

White is the most common fleet color in Santa Ana and the most variable one to match. Factory whites run in dozens of variants, the same code covers a warm white and a cool white depending on plant and build year, and white chalks under ultraviolet faster than most pigments in the book.

The failure mode is subtle rather than dramatic. A slightly cool white against a slightly warm one does not read as wrong color. It reads as a dirty panel, which drivers report as a wash problem for months before anyone works out that the wash bay was never the issue and the paint was.

The fix is variant decks and a letdown card, the same as any other color, plus a willingness to blend wider than seems necessary. On white we routinely carry the blend one panel further than we would on a dark solid, because there is no body line strong enough to hide a shade break on a white cargo side.

How does a carrier handle blend time on a fleet claim?

Blend time is a standard line on a written estimate and carriers pay it routinely, usually at a percentage of the full refinish time for the blended panel. It is not something invented at the counter. Every major estimating system carries a formula for it and appraisers expect to see it on a refinish line.

Where the discussion happens is on how many panels get blended. We document the color read, the variant selected, and why the boundary sits where it does, and that documentation is what settles a supplement without a second visit. On a fleet account with repeat claims the same record speeds up everything that follows.

Direct billing to the carrier is normal on this work. Your deductible, the appraiser visit, and any betterment on parts still apply, and we walk the fleet manager through that split before anything is authorized so the invoice at pickup holds no surprises.

What happens when a color simply cannot be matched?

It happens, and an honest answer is worth more than a bad match. Some colors are effectively unmatchable on an aged unit, particularly three stage pearls and older fleet reds where the pigment has shifted further than any variant in the deck covers. The formula gets close and the panel still reads different in daylight.

In that case the options are widening the blend until the difference has nowhere to show, refinishing the full side of the unit so the boundary lands at a corner post, or covering the panel with graphics. Which one applies depends on the body, the color, and what the fleet is willing to spend on the unit.

We say so before spraying rather than after. A letdown card held against the panel in daylight settles the question in ten minutes, and a fleet manager who has seen the card understands the recommendation immediately instead of taking it on faith at the counter and disputing it at pickup.

Common questions about color matching and blending

Why do you need to paint the panel next to the one that got hit?

Because a hard edge between two shades shows and a fade does not. The new color is blended out across the adjacent panel and the clear goes over both as one film, so there is no line for the eye to catch. Skipping the blend saves a couple of hours and produces a repair that gets rejected at delivery.

Can you match paint from a photo or a paint code we email over?

A code gets us to a starting formula and a photo tells us almost nothing, because camera white balance moves color further than seven years of sun does. The real match happens with the unit in the booth and a meter on the panel. Send the code ahead so we can pull variants, then bring the unit in.

Our trucks were all bought at the same time. Do they still need individual matching?

Usually yes. Same order, same plant, same code, and they still drift, because they were sprayed across different batches and then ran different routes. A truck parked outdoors in Santa Ana all week weathers faster than one that lives under a canopy. We read each unit as it comes in rather than assuming the fleet is uniform.

How long does a color match and blend take?

Four to twenty two labor hours and four to eight business days in the shop for most jobs. Reading, mixing, and spraying a letdown card is a few hours on its own. The rest is body work, blend prep, cure time, and the cut and buff that levels the clear edge out on the blended panel.

Will the blend still match in two years?

It will drift together rather than apart, which is the point of blending. New film over an old panel starts slightly ahead and the two converge as the fresh clear takes on its share of ultraviolet.
