What is the actual difference between skin damage and post damage?
A forklift strike on a trailer sidewall almost always damages two things, the skin you can see and the side post you cannot. The skin is the weather barrier. The post is the structure that carries roof load down to the floor and keeps the sidewall from bowing. Repairing the skin over a bent post gives back a smooth sidewall on a structure that is still compromised, and that shows as a bulge within a season.
Determining which is damaged means opening the wall, not judging the dent. On a sheet and post trailer the post is behind the skin at fixed spacing, so the location of the strike relative to the post spacing usually tells the story before anything comes apart. On a plate wall trailer the panel itself is structural, and the repair criteria are entirely different.
Repair scope is set by post count. A single bent post with a torn skin is a routine panel and post replacement. Three or four adjacent posts bent by a full width strike means the sidewall has lost a section of its load path and the roof bows above it need to be checked as well, because they were carrying the load the posts stopped carrying.

How do rear frames, doors and dock damage get repaired?
The rear frame takes contact every single load. Dock bumpers, uneven approaches and drivers backing into a plate that sits an inch too high all put load into the rear corners, and over a few thousand cycles the frame walks out of square. The first symptom is doors that need a slam, and the second is a door seal that no longer touches on one side.
Correction starts with measuring the rear opening on both diagonals and checking the rear post plumb. From there the rear frame is straightened or the affected corner section is replaced, then the hinges are rebuilt or replaced and the doors are hung and adjusted to the corrected opening. Hanging doors first and correcting the frame later is the sequence that produces trailers that never seal properly.
Roll doors on a trailer follow the same logic as any roll door. The track has to be true, the header has to be straight, and the counterbalance has to be set correctly. Where the trailer takes repeated dock hits, adding or restoring rear corner protection is worth doing at the same time, because the alternative is repairing the same corner every eighteen months.

When do floors, crossmembers and the upper coupler need attention?
Trailer floors fail in lanes. The wheel path of a pallet jack and the drop point behind the rear doors take a level of abuse the rest of the floor never sees, so a floor that looks tired in two strips is usually structurally fine everywhere else. Replacing those boards and checking the crossmembers under them is a far smaller job than a full floor.
Crossmembers crack at the weld to the long sill, and they crack from concentrated loads rather than from age. A trailer that has spent five years hauling palletized beverage out of a Santa Ana distribution yard has been point loading the same areas repeatedly. What does landing gear and lighting work involve?
Landing gear legs bend when a trailer is dropped on uneven ground or clipped in a tight yard, and a bent leg is not just an inconvenience. It transfers load unevenly into the crossmembers it is mounted to, and it eventually cracks the mounting brackets. Repair means straightening or replacing the leg, checking the crossbrace, and inspecting the mounting structure for cracks that started before anyone noticed the gear was crooked.
Trailer lighting fails at connections rather than at lamps. Ground points corrode, connector pins green over, and the harness chafes where it passes through a crossmember without a grommet. Chasing an intermittent marker lamp usually ends at a ground stud, so the practical repair is to rebuild the affected section of harness with sealed connectors and proper routing rather than to replace another lamp.
Reflective conspicuity marking gets replaced whenever the surface under it has been repaired. Tape does not adhere reliably to a fresh finish that has not gassed out, so on a repainted rear frame or side rail the marking is scheduled after cure. Unit numbering and company lettering follow the same rule and are laid out to the fleet standard rather than approximated.

A forklift punched through my trailer sidewall. Is that just a skin repair?
Only if the post behind it is straight, and that has to be verified rather than assumed. A fork strike between posts may genuinely be skin only, while a strike at a post usually bends the post as well. Repairing the skin over a bent post produces a sidewall that bulges within months, so the wall gets opened and the post condition confirmed before the repair is scoped.
My swing doors will not seal on one side. What causes that?
Nearly always a rear frame that has walked out of square from repeated dock contact, sometimes combined with worn hinges. The opening gets measured on both diagonals and the rear post checked for plumb, then the frame is corrected before the doors are rehung. Replacing seals on a distorted opening is the repair that always comes back.
Do I have to replace the entire trailer floor?
Usually not. Floors wear in lanes, specifically the pallet jack wheel path and the drop area behind the rear doors, while the rest of the floor stays sound. Board level replacement in the damaged lanes with inspection of the crossmembers underneath handles the majority of cases at a fraction of the cost of a full floor.
Can cracked crossmembers be welded, or does that weaken the trailer?
They can be repaired correctly. The crack is gouged out to sound material and rewelded with the appropriate process for the base metal, and where cracking has repeated in the same location a gusset or doubler is added to change the load path. Simply running a bead over a visible crack without preparing it is what causes repeat failures.
Can lighting and reflective marking be done in the same visit as body work?
Yes, and it is the efficient way to do it. The one exception is sequencing. Conspicuity tape and vinyl need a fully cured surface, so on any area that was repainted the marking step is scheduled after the finish has gassed out rather than applied the same afternoon the panel came out of the booth.
How long will a trailer be in the shop?
Skin panel and lighting work generally clears in one to three business days. Post replacement, floor sections and rear frame correction run three to seven. Upper coupler work, extensive crossmember repair or a full exterior refinish with new marking should be planned as a one to three week window. Trailers are the easiest units to schedule since a drop does not park a driver.
