What can polishing actually fix and what is it wasted on?

Correction works on defects that live inside the clear coat and do not go through it. Wash swirls, buffer trails from a previous job, light scratches you cannot catch with a fingernail, water spot etching, oxidation haze, and transferred paint from a rub against a dock post. All of those level out under a machine.

It does nothing for damage that has broken the film. If the scratch has color in it or shows primer at the bottom, no amount of polishing brings that back, because you would have to remove clear down below the base of the scratch and there is not that much clear on the panel to give.

The fingernail test is still the fastest check in the yard. Drag a nail across the defect. If it catches, the defect is deeper than a correction can safely reach and that area needs refinishing instead, which is a spray booth job rather than a polishing bay job.

How much clear coat does a correction remove?

A compounding pass removes somewhere between a quarter and a half mil of clear. Factory clear is typically one and a half to two mils total, which means a panel realistically has two, at most three, aggressive corrections in it across the life of the paint before there is not enough film left to protect the color.

That is why we gauge before we cut. A panel reading at one mil gets a light polish or gets left alone, because taking another half mil off it removes the ultraviolet absorbers along with the defects, buying twelve months of gloss at the cost of several years of paint life on that surface.

It is also why a fleet is better served by a lighter annual polish than by an aggressive correction every three years. Less film comes off in total, and the finish never gets far enough gone to need the heavy cut in the first place, which pushes the repaint conversation out by years.

What does a fleet correction pass involve?

Decontamination comes first. A clay bar or a chemical iron remover pulls embedded brake dust, rail dust, and industrial fallout out of the film. Compounding over embedded particles drags them across the panel and installs the exact scratches you are trying to remove, which is the most common self inflicted problem in this work.

Then a cutting pass with a rotary or dual action machine and a wool or foam cutting pad, followed by a refining polish that removes the haze the cutting pad left behind. Skipping the refining pass is what produces holograms, the faint parallel streaks that show up in low sun and look worse than the original oxidation did.

Finish with a sealant or a coating on the corrected surface. Bare corrected clear has no protection on it until something is applied, and on a unit going straight back to an outdoor Santa Ana yard that gap matters within weeks rather than months.

How does correction fit into a fleet appearance program?

Fleets that run correction as a scheduled item rather than a rescue job get far more out of it. A light annual polish on the horizontal surfaces of every unit costs less per truck than one heavy correction every four years, and it keeps the whole yard looking consistent instead of alternating between fresh and neglected units.

It also extends the interval before a repaint becomes necessary, which is where the real money sits. A unit whose clear never gets far enough gone to fail is a unit that never needs a five week booth slot at forty plus labor hours, and that arithmetic is what makes an appearance program pay for itself.

Correction is also worth running before a wrap goes on and after one comes off. Vinyl conforms to whatever is under it, so a swirl pattern or embedded fallout telegraphs through the film as texture. After removal, a light polish evens out the boundary between the covered panel and the exposed panel around it.

When does correction turn into refinishing?

The line is film thickness and whether the defect goes through the clear. Once the gauge reads thin, or the defects show color at the bottom, the honest answer is refinish. Polishing at that point is cosmetic theater that costs the fleet paint life it will not get back on that panel.

Mixed condition on one unit is completely normal and it does not have to be an all or nothing call. A roof that needs respray sits happily next to doors that only need polish, provided the color is matched to the current unit and blended properly at the boundaries between the two.

We gauge and report panel by panel, so the fleet manager receives a map of the unit rather than a single verdict, and can decide what to spend this quarter and what to schedule for the next one. That report goes on the account and gets compared against the next reading.

What can drivers do to keep a corrected finish looking right?

Most of the damage a corrected finish takes comes from the wash rather than from the road. Dry wiping dust off a panel with a shop rag installs the exact swirl pattern that was just polished out, and a single brush tunnel pass puts back several months of accumulated marks in about ninety seconds.

The routine that holds a finish is not complicated. Rinse first so grit comes off before anything touches the panel, wash with pH neutral soap and a clean mitt working from the roof down, and dry with clean microfiber or a blower rather than with whatever rag is hanging in the bay.

Fleets that put that on a laminated card in the wash bay get noticeably better results than fleets that assume drivers already know it. It costs nothing and it does not slow anyone down, but it has to be written somewhere or it does not survive the next driver change.

FAQ Questions

Common questions about paint correction and refinishing

Can polishing fix a scratch on our van?

If it does not catch a fingernail, usually yes. Correction levels the clear around the defect until the surface reads flat again. If the scratch has color or primer in it, the damage went through the clear and no polishing reaches it. That panel needs a spot refinish instead, which is a different work order.

How many times can a truck be polished?

Two to three aggressive corrections across the life of the paint, since each cutting pass removes roughly a quarter to a half mil out of a film that started around one and a half to two mils. Light annual polishing is a different matter and can run indefinitely, because the cut is a small fraction of that.

How long does a correction take on a cargo van?

Three to sixteen labor hours and one to three business days. A single stage polish on a mid size van is a same day item. Multi stage correction on a badly swirled dark unit with heavy fallout takes most of two days, because decontamination and the refining pass are where the hours actually go.

Is correction worth doing before we wrap the fleet?

Usually yes on defects that would telegraph through the film, and usually not on panels that are simply dull. Vinyl conforms to the surface under it, so a deep swirl pattern or embedded contamination shows as texture through the wrap. Heavy oxidation matters more for adhesion than for looks and gets handled differently.

Does a machine polish hurt the paint?

Done with a gauge and the right pad, no. Done aggressively on thin film, yes, and it is not recoverable. That is why we measure every panel before cutting and why we will decline to polish a panel that reads thin. There is no way to put clear coat back onto a panel with a buffer.

Can you correct oxidized paint on an older box truck?

Often yes on the vertical panels and often no on the roof and box top, because the horizontals carry the ultraviolet load and go first. It is normal for one unit to need respray on top and correction on the sides. We measure and report panel by panel so you can split the spend that way.
