Low gear multiplies torque so one person on a crank handle can lift a loaded nose. Typical sets are rated around 50,000 pounds of lift capacity and 160,000 pounds static holding capacity, which is why a properly working set holds a loaded van without drama.

The gearbox is where the ratings live and where the failures start. Inside are a bevel gear set and a shift mechanism, and both suffer when the crank gets forced while the gear is between positions. A driver who cranks hard through a notch will round teeth, and a gearbox with rounded teeth will slip under load with no warning at the worst possible time.

The legs are telescoping tubes, an outer housing welded or bolted to the trailer structure and an inner leg carrying a foot. Sand shoes, the wide flat pads, spread load on soft yard surfaces. Wheel feet roll for repositioning. What are the common failures and what do they cost to fix?

Dropping a trailer nose is the classic event. A trailer set down on legs that are not fully extended, or set on soft ground, buckles the inner leg and often bends the mounting bracket with it. The tell is a leg that will no longer retract smoothly or a trailer that sits nose low with one leg visibly out of plumb. That job is leg replacement plus bracket repair, not a straightening exercise.

Sheared cross shafts are the second common failure. When one leg binds and the operator keeps cranking, the shaft twists and eventually shears, and after that only the drive leg moves. Drivers frequently keep using it that way for weeks, which loads the drive leg alone and starts bending it. Replacing a shaft early is a two hour job. Replacing a shaft plus a bent leg plus a bracket is not.

Gearbox wear shows up as a crank that spins with no output, a gear that will not hold a position, or a handle that kicks back. Gearbox replacement is straightforward when the mounting is sound. Published ranges for landing gear work run roughly 400 to 5,500 dollars with 2 to 22 labor hours, and the spread between those numbers is almost entirely whether the mounting structure survived.

What does the mounting repair involve?

Landing gear does not hang on the skin. The brackets tie into the trailer's front structure and lower rail, and on most trailers they are both welded and bolted. When a leg gets driven into the ground, the load path pushes back through the bracket and cracks the welds or tears the mounting holes, and repairing the leg without repairing the bracket puts a new part on a compromised base.

Bracket repair means cutting out cracked weld, dressing the parent metal, checking the rail and front structure for tearing, and rewelding with added gusset material where the geometry allows it. Bolted mounting hardware gets replaced with grade 8 fasteners, and typical 1/2 inch grade 8 mounting bolts are torqued in the 75 to 85 foot pound band with the pattern brought up in stages rather than one bolt at a time.

Alignment is checked before anything is final. Both legs need to be plumb and parallel or the cross shaft binds and the gearbox pays for it. That check is done with the trailer supported on stands, not on its own gear, so nothing moves while the measurement is taken. It is the difference between a landing gear repair that lasts and one that comes back.

What coupler hardware do you replace?

On the utility and equipment trailer side, that means A-frame couplers and the 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch ball couplers rated in the 7,000 to 21,000 pound band, along with the safety chain D-rings that go with them. Worn coupler latches, elongated ball sockets and cracked A-frame welds are all common on Santa Ana contractor trailers that get used daily and looked at never.

On the heavier side, pintle hooks and lunette rings do the work. Lunette rings run from roughly 10,000 pounds up past 50,000 pounds depending on the class, and pintle hooks mount to a plate that is through bolted into the frame with grade 8 hardware. When the plate is done it gets replaced rather than shimmed, and the frame behind it gets checked for cracking at the same time.

The best time to schedule is the visit you already have booked. Landing gear is nearly always found during a floor, skin or coating job, and adding it to an open work order costs the fleet almost nothing in extra downtime. Common questions about landing gear and coupler repair

My landing gear cranks really hard all of a sudden. What is that?

Usually a binding leg or a cross shaft starting to twist, and occasionally a gearbox losing its shift. Whatever it is, hard cranking is the warning stage. Keep forcing it and the shaft shears or the gear teeth round, and then a two hour job turns into a leg and bracket job. Flag it that week and bring the trailer in on your next shuttle over.

A driver dropped a loaded trailer and bent a leg. Can it be straightened?

No, and it should not be. A buckled inner leg has lost its column strength, and heating and straightening it leaves a part that will fold again at a lower load than the first time. The leg gets replaced. What matters more is that the mounting bracket and front structure behind it get inspected, because that load went somewhere.

Do you replace pintle hooks and lunette rings?

Yes, along with the mounting plates behind them. The hardware itself is the easy part. The plate is what needs judgment, because elongated bolt holes will keep chewing new hardware. If the plate has moved, it gets replaced and the frame behind it is checked for cracks rather than shimmed and sent back out.

Is landing gear damage covered by insurance?

When it comes from an impact or a drop event, it is routinely billed direct to the carrier and handled as part of the claim file here. Should I put sand shoes or wheels on my trailers?
