How is a service body mounted to a chassis correctly?
The body never sits directly on the frame rail. Sills run between the two, either hardwood or steel channel, and their job is to spread the body load along the rail and to allow the frame to flex without the body fighting it. A frame twists constantly in service, and a body bolted rigidly to a twisting frame will crack at the mounts or crack the rail.
Attachment is through U-bolts around the rail at the standard positions, with spacers inside the U-bolt so tightening it cannot crush or pinch the rail flanges. Where the layout calls for it, mounting brackets bolt through the web of the rail with grade 8 hardware, hardened washers and proper edge distance, and those holes are drilled rather than torch cut.
The rule everybody wants to break is the flange rule. Nothing gets drilled or welded to the top or bottom flange of a frame rail. Those flanges carry the bending load and a hole or a weld there is a crack waiting for a pothole. When a mount will not work without touching a flange, the mount gets redesigned, which is exactly the kind of fabrication that separates a body install from a body drop.

Steel or aluminum, and how much payload does it cost me?
Steel bodies take abuse better and repair more easily, and for a Santa Ana utility or construction fleet that loads pipe, fittings and tooling every day, that matters. The cost is weight. A steel service body commonly runs 1,200 to 1,900 pounds depending on length and configuration, and every one of those pounds comes straight off what the truck can legally carry.
Aluminum bodies land closer to 700 to 1,100 pounds, and on a chassis that is tight against its rating that difference is the whole argument. Aluminum resists corrosion better in coastal Orange County air, which matters on any unit that will live near the coast for a decade. It also dents where steel would take the hit and shrug.
The right answer comes from the payload math, not from preference. Take the chassis rating, subtract the body, subtract the fixed equipment, subtract fuel and crew, and what is left is what a technician can actually load. Fleets that skip that calculation discover it at a scale house or in tire wear, and by then the body is already on the truck.

What makes compartments stay dry and stay closed?
Sealing is a system with three parts and all three have to work. The door gasket has to contact evenly around its full perimeter, the drip rail above the opening has to shed water away from the seal rather than onto it, and the compartment drains have to be open so anything that does get in leaves. Two out of three gives you a wet compartment.
Latches are the second half. Rotary latches are adjustable, and a latch that has drifted lets a door sit proud, which breaks the gasket contact and lets water track in along the top edge. Adjusting rotary latches so every door pulls the gasket down evenly is unglamorous work that solves most compartment water complaints without replacing anything.
Gas struts are the part that fails silently. A tired strut lets a door drop on a technician's hands and lets it sit slightly open at the top when closed. Struts are consumables and they are cheap, and replacing them across a compartment set while the truck is already in the shop takes very little time compared to doing it one door at a time as complaints arrive.

What about lighting, hardware and the details that get forgotten?
Marker and clearance lamps have to be correct on the finished vehicle, and a body swap changes where they belong. Lamp placement and function follow FMVSS 108 requirements after the body is on, which is a detail that gets skipped by shops that treat a body install as a lifting exercise. Compartment lighting is added at the same time because the wiring is already open.
The trailer connector usually has to move. A body install changes the rear of the truck completely, and a socket that used to be reachable is now behind a compartment or buried under a bumper. Relocating it, replacing the pigtail and sealing the new mounting point is a small line item that saves drivers real frustration for years.
Then there is everything a technician touches. Steps, grab handles, a ladder rack, a compartment shelf set, a vise mount, a hose reel bracket. None of it is exciting and all of it decides whether the crew likes the truck. It is still frequently the right call when the body is sound and the chassis is not.
For fleets, the efficient path is a standardized spec. Build the first unit, put it in service for two weeks with a real technician, make one round of changes, then replicate. Can I move my old service body onto a new chassis?
Frequently yes, and it is often the smart call when the body is sound and the chassis is worn out. The added work is fabricating sills and mounting brackets for a chassis the body was never built for, plus correcting lamp placement and hardware afterward. Expect more labor than a new body install, and expect a full look at the body underside once it is off.
Should I go steel or aluminum for a Santa Ana utility fleet?
