Which liftgate style fits my truck and my freight?

Tuck under gates fold beneath the body and leave the rear door clear, which is why they dominate delivery work where a truck backs into a dock. Rail and column gates run a platform up a vertical track, hold the platform level through the whole travel, and are the choice where a driver loads carts or wheeled cages that cannot tolerate a tilt at any point.

Cantilever gates swing out and down on arms, carry heavier ratings and handle rough surfaces better because the platform can be set at ground level with slack. Rail gates on trailers do the same job on a longer body. The right style comes from the freight and the destination, not from a price sheet, and picking by price is how Santa Ana fleets end up with gates that drivers avoid using.

Capacity is the second decision and it is not a place to shave. Ratings run in bands from 1,300 and 1,600 pounds through 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000, up past 4,400 and 5,500 pounds on heavy units. How does the gate actually attach to the truck?

Through the frame, not through the body. The gate frame is welded and bolted to the chassis rails at prepared attachment points, and on most installs that means fabricating and welding a mounting structure that spreads the gate load across a length of rail rather than concentrating it at two points. A gate hung off the rear crossmember alone will eventually tear it.

Frame preparation follows chassis rules that are not negotiable. Holes go in the web of the rail, never in the top or bottom flange, because the flanges carry the bending load and a hole there starts a crack. Edge distance is held at a minimum of twice the hole diameter, holes are drilled rather than torch cut, and grade 8 hardware with hardened washers is used throughout.

Torque is specified and staged. A 1/2 inch grade 8 mounting bolt lands near 110 foot pounds and a 5/8 inch grade 8 near 180 to 210 foot pounds depending on the thread and finish, brought up in a pattern rather than one fastener at a time. Where the chassis calls for it, rail reinforcement is added before the gate goes on rather than after the rail complains.

What does the power side of the install involve?

A gate draws serious current, so the power run is a major cable, commonly 2/0 or 4/0, from the battery bank back to the power unit with a circuit breaker sized to the gate at the source end. That breaker is the protection for the entire run and it goes as close to the battery as physically possible, because everything downstream of it is only protected once it exists.

The ground path is the half that gets neglected. A gate ground is a cable of the same size as the feed, landed on clean frame metal with the coating removed at the contact face and a star washer under the terminal. Grounding a gate through a body that is isolated from the frame by rubber sills is a slow failure that shows up as a gate that gets weaker over a year.

Cable routing is mechanical work. The run is supported, kept out of pinch points, sleeved where it passes through anything, and kept away from heat. Where a Santa Ana fleet is adding a gate to a truck that already has a body on it, the route often has to be planned around what is already there, which is time on the estimate and worth spending.

What gets repaired on a gate that is already installed?

Platforms take the most abuse. A steel platform that has been dropped on a curb or struck by a forklift bends at the outer edge, loses its flatness and stops meeting the dock cleanly. Platform sections are replaced, the surface is restored, and retention flippers and ramps that have been bent or torn off are replaced rather than straightened.

Gate frames crack where they meet the chassis. That is a fatigue location by design, because every lift cycle loads it, and a gate that has run tens of thousands of cycles on Santa Ana delivery routes will eventually show a crack at a weld toe. The repair is crack stop drilling, weld repair and added gusset material, done as structural work rather than a cosmetic bead.

Cylinder mounts, pins and bushings wear and let the platform develop play. Play means the geometry has changed, and changed geometry loads the frame in ways it was not designed for. Rebuilding a worn mount and replacing pins is inexpensive next to what a sloppy gate does to the frame over the following year, so it is worth catching at the first sign of slop.

Common questions about liftgate install and repair

What size liftgate do I need for my delivery route?

Rate it to the heaviest single load plus the pallet jack plus the operator, not to the average. A fleet moving 1,500 pound pallets with a 200 pound jack and a person on the platform is well past a 1,600 pound gate. Ratings step through 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000 pounds and up, and buying one step above the peak load is almost always cheaper than replacing an overworked gate.

Can you add a liftgate to a truck that already has a body on it?

Yes, and it is common work. The added variable is routing and clearance, because the body, the rear impact guard and anything already mounted under the rail have to be worked around. That is planning time on the estimate. Send photos of the rear of the chassis and underbody before quoting and the number that comes back will hold.

My gate frame is cracked where it meets the frame rail. Is that repairable?

Usually yes, and it is expected on a high cycle gate. The repair is crack stop drilling at both tips so it cannot keep running, weld repair at the joint, and added gusset material where the geometry allows. Welding over a crack without stop drilling it puts the same failure back in the same place within a season.

Does adding a liftgate mean moving the rear impact guard?

Almost always. The gate occupies the space the guard used to occupy, so the guard is relocated and reattached as part of the install to keep the rear of the vehicle correct. That work is included in the scope of a gate install here rather than left as an item the fleet discovers later.

Why did my gate get slow over time?

The most common cause is the power circuit rather than the gate. A corroded ground, an undersized cable from a previous install, or a connection that has loosened will drop voltage under load and the gate loses speed steadily. Measuring at the power unit under load finds it quickly, and it is a far cheaper fix than most people assume.

Will insurance cover a gate that got hit at a dock?

Dock strike damage to a gate is routinely billed direct to the carrier and handled as a claim file here.
