How does shelving get anchored into a van?

Into structure, using the factory attachment points wherever they exist. Modern cargo vans have threaded points in the floor and along the wall ribs specifically for upfit, and they are the correct anchor because the body designer put load path behind them. A layout that uses them is stronger and faster to install than one that improvises.

Where new penetrations are needed, floor anchoring goes through with 3/8 inch grade 5 hardware and backing plates on the underside, typically 2 by 2 by 1/4 inch or larger, so the fastener load spreads into the floor pan instead of pulling through it. Every penetration is sealed with butyl at the mating face and seam sealer on the underside, because a van floor that leaks will rust from the inside out.

Wall anchoring picks up the body ribs, never unsupported sheet. A shelf lag screwed into a van side panel will hold a box of fittings until a hard stop, and then it will not. Finding the ribs, mounting to them, and using spanning members where a shelf falls between ribs is the difference between an install that survives a decade of Santa Ana stop and go and one that rattles loose in a year.

What is different about electric delivery vans?

The floor is not a blank sheet. Battery packs sit under the cargo floor on most electric vans, and the manufacturer defines zones where drilling is prohibited outright. Putting a fastener through a floor pan above a battery module is not a risk to be managed, it is a line that does not get crossed, so anchoring uses factory attachment points and structural members only.

That constraint shapes the layout rather than preventing it. Shelving gets located to land on the attachment points the platform provides, spanning members carry shelves that fall between them, and wall anchoring picks up more of the load than it would in a conventional van. It takes more planning time and produces a perfectly solid result.

Weight discipline matters more on these units too. Electric delivery vans in Santa Ana parcel and service work are often tight on payload, and a 350 pound steel package versus a 150 pound aluminum one is a difference the fleet will feel on every route.
