Why does body work require recalibration?
Driver assistance sensors reference a fixed position on the vehicle. A forward camera behind the windshield knows where the road is because it was calibrated to a known height and angle. Move the windshield, the bracket, the bumper, the mirror housing or the panel a sensor mounts to, and the sensor now reports the world from a position it does not know about.
The error is small in physical terms and large in effect. A camera off by one degree at the glass produces meaningful lateral error at the distance where the system is deciding whether a lane line has been crossed. Nothing about that shows on the dash, because the system does not know it has been moved. It reports confidently from the wrong reference.
This is why recalibration is a repair operation rather than an add on. Any job that disturbs a windshield, a bumper cover with radar behind it, a mirror with a blind spot sensor, a rear panel with a camera, or the ride height of the unit puts calibration back on the list. On a commercial fleet with mixed vehicle ages the affected list varies by unit, so it gets checked per vehicle.

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?
Static calibration happens in the shop with the vehicle stationary and physical targets placed at manufacturer specified distances and heights in front of or around it. It requires level floor, controlled lighting, adequate clear space around the unit and accurate target placement, since an error in target position becomes an error in calibration.
Dynamic calibration requires the vehicle to be driven at specified speeds on roads with clear lane markings while the system learns. Some manufacturers require one, some the other, and many require static followed by dynamic in sequence. Which applies is determined by the vehicle, not by which is more convenient for the shop that day.
Both are bracketed by scans. A pre repair scan captures fault codes present before any work starts, which matters because it separates preexisting conditions from anything the repair might have caused. A post repair scan confirms every module is communicating and no codes remain. Both scan reports go in the file and to the carrier.
Conditions matter as much as procedure. Static work needs a level floor, even lighting without glare or shadow across the targets, and enough clear space that the target sits at the exact distance the procedure specifies. Dynamic work needs roads with clean lane markings at the speeds the system expects, which is a real constraint on a weekday in Orange County.

What makes commercial ADAS work different from passenger cars?
Commercial units add variables passenger cars do not have. Ride height changes with load, upfit equipment can block a sensor field of view, and aftermarket bodies mounted to a cab chassis may place a camera or radar in a location the base vehicle procedure never anticipated. Each of those has to be accounted for before calibration is attempted.
Physical space is the other constraint. Static calibration on a straight truck needs a target setup at a working distance from a vehicle that may be 26 feet long, on a floor flat enough that the measurement means something. That is a facility problem, and it is one reason this work happens at the Yorba Linda shop rather than anywhere a scan tool can be plugged in.
Mixed fleets multiply the procedures. A Santa Ana operator running vans, cab chassis units and electric delivery platforms may need four different calibration procedures across the same yard. Fleets that keep those records with the unit history are in a much better position.
Where a calibration cannot be completed, that gets documented too. A sensor with internal damage, a bracket that will not hold specification, or a vehicle condition that blocks the procedure all produce a written explanation rather than a quiet omission. The fleet finds out at the shop instead of finding out later on a route.

Does every windshield replacement need recalibration?
Every windshield replacement on a unit with a camera mounted to the glass or its bracket does. The camera reference moves with the glass, so the system is looking from a slightly different position afterward. Units without a forward camera do not require it, and the pre repair scan establishes which category a specific vehicle is in.
Why is there no warning light if the camera is out of calibration?
Because the system does not know it moved. It reports what it sees from wherever it now sits and assumes that position is correct. That is precisely what makes an uncalibrated sensor a problem worth paying attention to. Only a scan and a calibration procedure confirm the system is referencing the position it thinks it is.
Can calibration be done at my Santa Ana yard?
