How does a cargo floor fail?

Most commercial cargo floors are laminated hardwood, typically oak strips glued into panels and fastened down to subfloor members below. The failure mode is almost always moisture. Water reaching the boards through a leaking seam, a failed drain or a punctured liner swells the wood, breaks the glue lines and lifts the fasteners, and the deck starts to move under load.

Mechanical damage does the rest. Pallet jack wheels concentrate load in narrow tracks, forklift tines gouge the surface at the rear, and dropped freight splinters boards. Once the surface is broken, water reaches the interior of the board and the deterioration accelerates from the inside where nobody can see it.

Fastener failure is the third path and the most overlooked. Screws and rivets holding the deck to the subfloor loosen with vibration and load cycling, and a floor that is no longer clamped down flexes with every pallet that crosses it. That flex breaks glue lines that were otherwise sound, which is why refastening a floor early is far cheaper than replacing one later.

How is a floor section replaced?

Replacement is done in full board widths running the length of the affected area rather than as patches. A patched section creates two new seams for water to find, and the patch sits at a slightly different height than the surrounding deck, which a pallet jack finds immediately. Full width sections keep the deck flat and keep the seam count down.

The subfloor gets inspected while the deck is open. Corroded or bent supports underneath are repaired before new boards go down, because a floor fastened to a deteriorated support is a floor that will move again. This is the part of the job that only exists when the deck is up, and skipping it is the reason floors get replaced twice.

New boards are fastened on the original pattern with the correct fastener type and length. Screw or rivet spacing is not arbitrary. It is what keeps the deck clamped flat under a rolling load. Seams and edges are then sealed and the threshold at the rear frame is set so the transition is smooth for pallet jack wheels crossing it hundreds of times a week.

Board direction and thickness are matched to the original build. Laminated decks come in specific thicknesses, and a section a quarter inch off from its neighbors creates a ridge that a loaded pallet jack finds on every pass. Where the original material is discontinued, the closest available profile is used and the difference is pointed out before the boards go down.

What does interior lining actually do?

Scuff liner and wall lining exist to keep cargo from hitting the body skin. On an aluminum or FRP body the skin is thin and it dents from the inside just as easily as from the outside. A body running without intact liner is putting a new dent in a panel every time a pallet shifts, and those dents are permanent.

Liner also protects the fasteners and the panel joints. A pallet corner catching a rivet head pops the rivet, and a popped rivet is a water entry point into the panel joint. On insulated bodies the liner is doing even more work, since a puncture exposes the foam core to wash down water and starts the delamination process.

Material choice depends on duty. Plywood lining is inexpensive and easy to replace but absorbs moisture at its edges. Composite and hard plastic liner costs more and holds up far better in wet or wash down environments. Fleets running food distribution out of Santa Ana are generally better served by the harder material despite the higher install cost.

How is logistics track installed correctly?

Logistics track and E track carry real load, so it has to land on structure rather than on skin. Track is fastened into the vertical posts at the correct spacing, which means locating the posts behind the liner before drilling rather than after. Track through a skin panel with nothing behind it will pull out under the first heavy strap, taking a section of panel with it.

Height layout follows how the fleet actually loads. Horizontal track at a working height suits strapping palletized freight. Vertical track at each post suits decking beams and adjustable shelving. Getting this wrong is expensive because the holes stay in the body long after the track is moved.

Fastener penetrations get sealed. Every hole through an interior liner into a panel is a potential water path, particularly in a wash down environment. Sealing at install costs minutes. Chasing a mystery water stain on a pallet six months later costs considerably more, and it usually gets blamed on a roof seam that is perfectly sound.

This is fleet billed work rather than carrier billed, since floor and liner deterioration is wear rather than sudden damage. The exception is impact damage, such as a forklift through a wall, which goes on a claim with the usual documentation. The estimate separates wear from incident damage so both are clear.

Can you replace just the damaged section of floor?

Yes, and full board width sections are the right way to do it. Small patches create extra seams and height differences that pallet jack wheels find immediately. A full width section keeps the deck flat, limits the seam count and lets the subfloor underneath be inspected and repaired while the area is open.

How do I know if the subfloor is bad or just the boards?

Boards that keep loosening after refastening are the signal. A deck fastened to a sound subfloor stays tight. Is composite lining worth the extra cost over plywood?
