What is conspicuity tape and where does it go?
Conspicuity tape is retroreflective sheeting that returns headlight energy back toward its source, which is what makes a trailer side visible from a distance at night. The common pattern is alternating red and white segments, usually in eleven inch or seven inch runs, applied along the lower side rail and across the rear of the body.
Rear marking usually combines that alternating strip along the lower rear with white corner marks near the top of the body. Where a fleet specifies solid white on the sides of a straight truck instead of the alternating pattern, we apply what is specified. The pattern is the operator's call and its safety staff's call, not ours.
Placement matters as much as pattern. Sheeting mounted where a mud flap bracket, a light bar, or a tank blocks the sight line does nothing regardless of how good the material is, so layout gets checked against the actual body before anything gets stuck down permanently.

Why does reflective tape stop reflecting after a few years?
Retroreflective sheeting works through a layer of glass beads or microprismatic elements sealed under a clear film. Once that seal is compromised, water gets in, the elements cloud over, and the return drops sharply. From twenty feet in daylight the tape still looks white and fine. Under headlights at night it has gone dark.
Edges are where the seal goes. Every cut end, every rivet the sheeting crosses, and every lifted corner is a water path into the material. Close range pressure washing accelerates it dramatically, and a fleet that runs a high pressure cycle down the lower rails will kill sheeting in half its expected life.
The practical test is a flashlight at night from thirty or forty feet back. Segments that have gone milky or grey against the ones that still flare are due for replacement. Fleets in Santa Ana with outdoor yards typically see five to seven years out of quality sheeting on a clean flat rail, and less on corrugation.

How is sheeting applied to a corrugated trailer skin so it stays on?
Corrugated aluminum and riveted skins present the same problem a wrap does. Sheeting bridged across a channel or domed over a rivet has no adhesive contact under the bridge, and it lifts from the first close range wash. It has to be pushed into the profile and heated so it holds the shape it was put into.
The panel is cleaned and solvent wiped first. Road film on a lower side rail is heavy and greasy, and adhesive applied over it grabs the dirt rather than the aluminum underneath. Application temperature matters as well. Below about fifty degrees the adhesive does not flow and tack out properly and the bond never fully develops.
Segments are butted rather than overlapped, cut edges are sealed, and the sheeting is rolled down with firm pressure after placement so the adhesive wets out across the whole footprint rather than only where the installer's thumb happened to travel.

What does this service include and what does it not include?
It includes supply and application of retroreflective sheeting, removal of failed or delaminated tape, cleaning and preparation of the surface, and layout to the pattern the fleet or its safety staff specifies. It also includes replacing damaged segments after a body repair or a panel replacement.
It does not include any form of regulatory assessment. This shop applies markings. It does not evaluate a unit against a rule, does not sign off on the condition of a vehicle, and does not issue compliance paperwork of any kind. If a fleet program requires that, it has to come from a provider set up for it.
In practice the fleets we work with send a marking specification with the unit, either their own internal standard or one their safety staff produced, and we apply to it exactly. If no specification arrives with the unit we ask for one rather than guessing at a pattern.

How do reflective markings interact with a wrap or a repaint?
Order of operations matters. Sheeting goes on after paint and after wrap, never under either one. Sheeting applied first and then wrapped over is no longer retroreflective at all, and sheeting masked during a respray leaves a hard paint edge around it that becomes the lift point within a year.
On a refinish, existing sheeting comes off, the rail is refinished, the paint gets its cure time, and new sheeting goes on afterward. Reusing pulled sheeting does not work. The adhesive is spent and the material distorts coming off, so replacement gets budgeted as part of the paint job rather than treated as a surprise at pickup.
On a wrap, the sheeting goes over the finished film. That means the wrap edge and the sheeting edge should not coincide, because two edges stacked on the same line will lift together on a Santa Ana unit that gets washed weekly.

What else gets applied alongside conspicuity sheeting?
Reflective work usually travels with other marking. Rear door chevron panels on service and utility bodies, reflective unit numbers so a yard camera can read a truck at night, reflective striping packages on municipal bodies, and edge marking on flatbed and stake bodies where the deck line disappears after dark.
All of it is application work to a supplied specification. Where a fleet has a written appearance and marking standard, we work from that document. Where it does not, we lay out something legible and consistent and the fleet approves it before anything goes onto the first unit in the group.
Batching that work matters more than it sounds. A unit coming in for graphics, numbering, and reflective marking as three separate visits costs three drives up SR-55 and three days off a Santa Ana route. Sequenced into one visit it is a single drop with one cure window at the end of it.

Do you handle compliance sign off on our trailer markings?
No. This is application work. We install retroreflective sheeting to the pattern your safety staff specifies, and we do not assess, document, or sign off on regulatory status for any unit. If your program requires that, it has to come from a provider set up for it. Send us the marking specification and we apply it.
How long does reflective tape last?
Five to seven years on a clean flat rail in a Santa Ana outdoor yard, and noticeably less on corrugated skins or on units that get close range pressure washing along the lower rails. Failure is usually water entering at a cut edge or a rivet, which clouds the sheeting so it stops returning light at night.
How do we know when tape needs replacing?
Look at it at night with a flashlight from thirty or forty feet back. Sound sheeting flares brightly and dead sheeting reads grey or milky. Daylight appearance tells you almost nothing, which is why sheeting that looks perfectly white in the yard can be doing nothing at all on the freeway at two in the morning.
Can you replace just the damaged segments after a repair?

The complication is that new sheeting next to seven year old sheeting will be visibly brighter at night, which is fine functionally but looks uneven. On a rail with heavily degraded material, replacing the full run costs little more than patching a section of it.
What does reflective marking cost?
Two hundred fifty to twelve hundred dollars at one to six labor hours. A rear marking replacement on a straight truck sits at the low end. A full side and rear replacement on a corrugated forty eight foot trailer, including stripping the old sheeting off, sits at the top. Cost moves with strip time more than application time.
Should the tape go on before or after a wrap?
After, always. Sheeting under vinyl no longer reflects, which defeats the entire purpose of putting it there. On a repaint the same rule applies with a cure window in between, since the rail needs its thirty days before adhesive goes onto it. We sequence the work order that way as a matter of course.
