Why is a cargo van a completely different repair discipline from a truck cab?

There is no frame. A body on frame truck has a chassis that carries load, with a cab and a body bolted on top, and you can straighten the frame and hang panels on it. A unibody van is a single welded and bonded shell where the floor, the rockers, the pillars, the roof, and the side panels all work together as one structural unit. Damage anywhere in that shell moves everything else.

That changes what repair means. You cannot pull one corner back and consider the job done, because the load path runs through the entire body. Structural correction on a van is a whole shell measurement against specification, anchored properly, with staged pulls that bring the complete structure back rather than fixing the visible corner in isolation.

It also changes the parts conversation. On a truck you replace a cab panel. On a van, many panels are structural members, and whether one can be sectioned, where, and with what joint type comes from the manufacturer body repair procedure rather than from what looks reasonable. Cutting a van pillar in the wrong place removes structure the vehicle needs.

How do you repair a sliding door opening without ruining the track?

The sliding door track is built into the body side, and on most of these vans the lower and center tracks are structural or semi structural components of the side panel rather than bolted on rails. That means side panel damage anywhere near the opening is potentially track damage, and the door will tell you about it long before anyone notices the panel is out.

Diagnosis starts with how the door behaves, not with how the panel looks. A door that catches at one point in its travel has a track deformation at that point. A door that drops as it opens has a roller bracket or a track height problem. A door that closes but will not latch cleanly has an opening that has changed shape, which is a body issue rather than a latch adjustment.

Repair means correcting the opening and the track geometry first, then addressing rollers, brackets, and the latch. Doing it the other way around, which is what happens when someone adjusts the striker to make the door latch, hides the real problem and eventually wears the roller assembly out. We check door travel through the full range on the finished repair before release.

What does roof and upper body damage take on a high roof van?

High roof vans get hit constantly, because a driver who has spent years in a low roof unit does not have the height instinct for a taller one. Parking structures, older Santa Ana loading canopies, and drive through lanes all catch the front roof edge. The damage runs across the front of the roof and into the roof rails on both sides.

The roof on these vans is a skin over a rib structure, and the ribs are what actually matter. A dented skin over intact ribs is a cosmetic repair. A crease that has folded a rib is structural, because those ribs are holding the shape of the whole upper body and a folded one lets the roof line sag toward the middle over time.

There is also everything mounted to the roof. Vent fans, roof racks, ladder racks, antenna mounts, and light bars all penetrate the roof skin, and any of them in the damage zone means the penetration seal has been compromised. Water finding its way into a van roof runs along the ribs and shows up somewhere completely unrelated, which is why every penetration in the area gets resealed.

How are shelving, racks, and upfit equipment handled during panel work?

Most working vans in a Santa Ana fleet are full of shelving, drawer units, bulkheads, ladder racks, and wiring for whatever the trade requires. Panel repair on the body side means all of that comes out, because you cannot access the inside of a panel through a shelf unit and you cannot weld or bond near a loaded rack.

Where do the sensors live on these vans and what needs recalibration?

Front camera on the windshield, forward radar behind the front fascia or in the grille area, and blind spot radar in the rear bumper corners is the typical layout. That last one matters more than fleets expect, because rear bumper corners are exactly what gets hit in a loading dock or a parking lot, and a shifted blind spot radar reports incorrectly rather than reporting a fault.

Reverse and surround cameras add mounting points at the rear door and around the body, and any of those disturbed by panel work needs its view re verified. A camera that is a few degrees off after a door repair gives the driver a distorted sense of distance at exactly the moment they are backing into a tight Santa Ana alley.

Once water sits in a rocker it works outward, and by the time it blisters the paint at the bottom edge there is usually more gone on the inside than the outside.

Wheel arches follow the same pattern for the same reason, with the added factor of direct stone throw from the tire. Fleets that run without adequate spray control at the rear wheels see arch corrosion years earlier than fleets that do, which is one of the cheapest preventable maintenance items on the whole vehicle.

Repair is a sectioning job with full corrosion protection restoration, and on a unibody the section location matters structurally rather than just cosmetically. Rockers are load bearing members, so where the section goes and what joint type is used both come from the body repair procedure. Then cavity wax, drain restoration, and coating so it does not simply start again.
