What does a spray in liner do that a drop in cannot?

A spray in liner bonds directly to the substrate, so there is no gap between the coating and the metal. A drop in liner sits on top of the bed and traps grit, water and road spray underneath it, and that trapped moisture works on the metal continuously. On a fleet unit in coastal Orange County, that gap is where corrosion starts.

The bonded layer also carries impact differently. A spray in coating flexes with the panel and spreads a point load across the surrounding area, while a drop in liner transfers the hit to the metal underneath. Tools, fittings and material dropped into a service bed do noticeably less damage to a sprayed surface than to a bare or drop in lined one.

The third advantage is fit. A sprayed liner covers exactly the surface it is applied to, including tie down pockets, bulkhead corners, wheel well contours and the areas around fasteners. Those are the places a molded liner cannot reach and, not coincidentally, the places corrosion is most likely to start on a working unit.

How is a surface prepared before spraying?

Preparation is the entire job. A liner is only as good as the bond underneath it, and a bond made against wax, oil, loose paint or rust will release in sheets under the first heavy load. The surface is cleaned, degreased, then mechanically abraded to a uniform profile so the coating has something to key into.

Damage gets addressed first. Dents are worked out, corrosion is removed to sound metal and treated, and any holes or tears are repaired. Spraying a textured coating over a dent hides it without fixing it, and spraying over corrosion seals moisture against the metal exactly the way a drop in liner does. Neither is an acceptable starting point.

Masking then defines the edge. A liner edge that stops in a straight, deliberate line at a rail cap or a bed lip looks intentional and seals properly. An edge that wanders is where water gets under the coating. Areas that must stay clean, including latch mechanisms, threaded holes and electrical connections, are masked before any material moves.

Temperature and humidity are checked before the gun is loaded. These materials react on contact and the reaction rate shifts with ambient conditions, so a bay that is too cold produces a coating that flows differently than intended and one that is too humid can leave the surface tacky. Fleets sending several units get the same specification on each rather than a result that drifts with the weather.

Where does spray in liner make sense on a fleet unit?

Pickup and service body beds are the obvious application, particularly on trade units carrying tools, fittings and material that slide around all day. The textured surface reduces load movement, which cuts both cargo damage and the noise a driver listens to for eight hours.

Stake and flatbed decks are the second common use. A wood deck that has been sealed with a sprayed liner stops absorbing water at the surface, which is what causes checking and rot in the boards. On a steel deck, the coating stops the surface corrosion that starts wherever a load has scraped through the paint.

Beyond decks, fleets use it on wheel wells, rocker areas, bumpers, step surfaces, tailgate tops and the interior floors of cargo bodies. Wheel wells in particular take constant abrasive spray, and a sprayed liner there is one of the highest value applications of the material on any unit running Santa Ana surface streets year round.

How long does the coating take to cure and hold up?

Polyurea formulations set within seconds of leaving the gun and reach handling strength in under an hour, which is why they suit a fast turnaround. Polyurethane formulations flow out smoother and cure over a longer window. Which one is used depends on the surface and the finish the fleet wants, and both are typically ready for service within 24 hours.

Thickness is specified rather than sprayed by eye. A bed liner is commonly applied at a nominal thickness measured in mils, with more material at the high wear areas such as the tailgate area and the rear of the bed. Consistent thickness is what gives predictable wear life, and it is measured rather than estimated.

Ultraviolet exposure is the main long term factor. Most liner materials will chalk or fade at the surface under years of direct Southern California sun without affecting the protection underneath. UV stable topcoats are available where appearance matters, which is common on units carrying fleet branding where a faded bed looks out of place.

What does it cost and when should a fleet apply it?

Published ranges run 500 dollars to 1,800 dollars at 3 to 7 labor hours. A standard pickup bed sits near the bottom. A large flatbed deck, a service body with multiple compartments, or a job with substantial preparation work moves toward the top. Preparation is what varies most, since a bed with corrosion to address adds hours before spraying starts.

Light cosmetic turnaround applies at one to three business days. Most single unit applications complete inside a day when the surface is sound. Units needing corrosion repair or dent work before coating move to whatever timeline that repair requires, since spraying over unaddressed damage defeats the purpose.

The best time to apply it is when a unit is new to the fleet or freshly repaired. Coating a sound surface protects it from day one. Coating a bed that has already corroded requires stripping and repairing first, which costs more than the liner does. Santa Ana fleets adding units to a rotation generally spec this at intake.

Common questions about spray in bed and box liner

Can you spray over an existing liner?

Only when the existing coating is sound and properly bonded. A liner that is peeling, chalked through or lifting at the edges has to be removed, because a new coating over a failing one fails with it. The existing surface is checked for adhesion before the decision is made, and the finding is written on the estimate.

Will the liner stop rust that has already started?

Not on its own. Corrosion has to be mechanically removed to sound metal and treated before coating. A liner sprayed over active rust seals moisture against the metal and hides the progression, which is worse than leaving it exposed. That prep work is quoted separately so the fleet sees what it is paying for.

How long before the unit can be loaded?

Most applications are ready for service within 24 hours, and polyurea formulations reach handling strength within an hour of spraying. Loading heavy freight onto a coating that has not fully cured can mar the surface, so the shop gives a specific release time for the material actually used rather than a general figure.

Does it come in colors other than black?

Tinted liner is available in a range of colors, which fleets use to match branding or to distinguish unit types across a yard. Colored material has slightly different UV behavior than black, so a UV stable topcoat is usually recommended where color consistency matters over several years of Southern California sun.

Can you coat a wood flatbed deck?

Yes. Wood decks take the coating well once they are dry, clean and mechanically prepared, and the sealed surface stops the water absorption that causes checking and rot. Boards that are already soft or split are replaced first, since coating over failing wood just puts a new surface on a deck that is going to need replacement anyway.

Is this work done at my Santa Ana location?
