Adjustment and replacement are done with proper winding bars and controlled procedure, never with improvised tools.

A door that has become heavy to lift or that will not stay up has usually lost spring tension. Springs fatigue with cycle count, and a high cycle delivery unit doing 40 or more stops a day works its spring far harder than an occasional use body. Retensioning restores a spring with life left in it. A spring showing a gap in the coils or a broken section gets replaced.

Cables and drums are inspected at the same time, since a spring problem often shows up first as uneven cable tension. Frayed cable is replaced rather than reused, and a cable that has jumped its drum groove is rewound after checking why it jumped, which is usually a door that ran out of level or a drum that has loosened on the shaft.

Panel and hinge condition is checked on the same pass. A roll up door is only as square as its weakest hinge, and one bent hinge between panels lets the door buckle as it enters the curve of the track. Replacing a single hinge is a short job. Running the door on a bent one until it jams the whole assembly is not.

What does swing door work involve?

Swing doors fail at the hardware more than at the panel. Hinges wear and let the door drop, cam bars and lock rods bend from being forced, keepers and cams wear until the door no longer pulls tight against the seal, and hold backs break off leaving doors swinging into traffic at a curbside stop.

The sequence is the same as any door work: verify the opening is square, then set the hardware to it. Hinges are replaced or rebuilt, cam bars straightened or replaced, and keepers repositioned so the cam pulls the door into the gasket with real compression rather than just holding it closed. A door that latches without compressing the seal will leak at the first rain.

Gaskets are the last piece and the most often neglected. A hardened or compressed gasket lets water and road spray into the cargo space and, on an insulated body, lets conditioned air out continuously. Replacement is straightforward as long as the frame it seals against has been corrected first.

How is the door opening measured and corrected?

Both diagonals of the cargo opening are measured corner to corner. On a square opening those two numbers match. A difference indicates the opening is racked, and the direction of the difference tells you which corner has moved. On a well used delivery body the racking is almost always at the rear corner that meets the dock first.

Light racking can often be corrected by pulling the corner back and reinforcing the joint. Heavier damage means rear frame components or a corner post get replaced. Either way the correction happens before the door and hardware are addressed, because hardware set to a racked opening is hardware that will need setting again shortly.

After correction the door is cycled repeatedly and checked at every position. A roll up should run its full travel without catching and stay where it is placed. A swing door should close with even gasket compression all the way around. Both get verified with the unit sitting level, because a body on uneven ground gives a misleading result.
