In the trough, and the trough is predictable. Why do translucent roof panels matter more than they look?

Because they are the only light source inside a loaded body and they are the most common leak path on a moving truck. A crew working a dark box at seven in the evening moves slower and damages more furniture, so a yellowed or patched roof panel costs money in ways that never appear on a repair invoice.

They also fail predictably. Fiberglass panels chalk and craze under Southern California sun, then crack at the fastener line where the panel is restrained and the roof bows flex. Once a crack reaches a seam, water tracks along the roof bow and shows up somewhere else entirely, which is why the wet spot in the cargo area is rarely under the actual hole.

Replacement is the honest fix on a panel that has crazed. Sealing a crack in a chalked panel buys a season at best because the material around it is already at the end of its service life. New panel, new sealing at the bows and rails, and the interior stays dry and lit for years rather than months.

What fails on walk ramps, door tracks and rear sills?

The ramp fails at its hinge and at its stow rails. A walk ramp is deployed and stowed at every stop and it gets dropped rather than lowered when a crew is in a hurry, so hinge points elongate and the stow rails distort until the ramp binds halfway. A ramp that takes two people to stow is costing minutes at every stop of every day.

Roll doors fail at the track and at the bottom panel. Loaded carts and dollies clip the bottom section, the panel bows, and the door starts binding in the curve of the track. Straightening the track without correcting the panel puts the bind straight back, so both get addressed together along with the header the track is mounted to.

Rear sills take the accumulated load of everything else. Every dolly rolled over the threshold, every ramp dropped onto the sill and every dock contact puts load into that member, and once water gets past a worn threshold the sub floor and the sill deteriorate together. Replacing a floor lane and resealing the threshold on a planned cycle prevents the structural version of that job.

Our walk ramp binds halfway and takes two people to stow. What is wrong?

Almost always the hinge points have elongated and the stow rails have distorted. A ramp gets dropped rather than lowered when a crew is moving fast, and that load goes into the same two places every stop. Rebuilding the hinge points without correcting the rails leaves the bind, so both are addressed together and the ramp is cycled before release.

Can a cracked translucent roof panel just be sealed?

It can, but on a panel that has already chalked and crazed it buys a season at best because the surrounding material is at the end of its service life. Replacement with fresh sealing at the roof bows and rails keeps the cargo area dry and lit for years. Crews also work faster in a lit body, which is worth more than the panel costs.

Water is showing up in the cargo area but not under the crack. Why?

Because water tracks along a roof bow or a rail after it enters, then drops wherever the path ends. The wet spot is almost never below the actual entry point, which is why chasing the stain leads nowhere. The roof panels, bow seals, rail joints and any roof penetration all get checked as a system rather than sealing the nearest suspicious spot.
